Remembering the Wright Brothers
To see more photos of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, visit the location page.
109 years ago today, two bicycle mechanic brothers from Ohio, Wilbur and Orville Wright, piloted the first sustained airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Wind, sand and privacy brought the Wrights to Kitty Hawk’s Kill Devil Hills in 1900 and the brothers spent three years conducting experiments there. Visitors to the hills today can walk along the routes of the four flights that took place on December 17, 1903, and also visit the 60-foot (18 meter) granite monument that was dedicated in their honor in 1932. Inscribed on the memorial tower is the phrase “In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright conceived by genius achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith,” and atop the tower is a marine beacon, similar to one found in a lighthouse.
raynor ganan signature masala™
one of my 2012 goals is to create a raynor ganan signature masala™—a sekrit spice blend that people will want to flavor everything from their eggs to their popcorn with. to do so, i’ve been scouring the local spice markets for exotic ingredients from far off corners of the globe. i have a rudimentary concoction right now but i’ve come to a very important realisation: namely, while i know what spices i like, i have no idea how spices go together. to help me better understand the synergy among turmeric and thyme and coriander and cream of tartar, i developed this chart which breaks down established spice blends into their (sometimes) shared ingredients. and now i am one step closer to inventing the next ranch seasoning.
I’m talking to you, Asheville, and you, tourists! They’re lots of fun once you get over your fear of going!
Navigating Roundabouts: A Concept That Continues To Perplex Middle America
Because we cannot re-learn newness or re-experience the seconds before our first kiss or first cruelty, we keep kernels. That’s what Moonrise does. While the conversation might be lost, we do remember where we were sitting when an adult, perhaps feeling especially vulnerable, spoke to us for the first time as if we were one too. Or how during that one summer, there was a bad lighting storm and a girl named Suzy who wore her mother’s perfume. Or the way our parents looked on especially hot days in various states of undress.
